The Egg and Green Tea Diet – My 3-Day Experience … Worth It?

Saturday 13th April 2024

We have a funny joke in my house surrounding eggs.

When my son was born, he was actually allergic to eggs (even though he’d never even had one before).

Let me explain.

At the time, I was breastfeeding him, but he would get terribly upset and cry hysterically for hours anytime I breastfed him after I had eaten eggs. The doctor diagnosed an egg allergy. It’s quite common among breastfed newborns. The doc told me to stop eating eggs, so I did. Sure enough, just a few days after I cut eggs out of my diet, our little son became a happy boy with no more bouts of intense crying.

That all changed once he turned one. That’s when we started feeding him brand-new solid foods. As soon as that kid got a taste of eggs, he was never the same. Now, he eats eggs like there’s no tomorrow. He didn’t have allergic symptoms when he ate them himself. We jokingly say that he’s making up for lost time!

All of this to say that he was quite excited (he’s now seven years old) when I told him that mom was going to be starting a new diet: The Egg Diet!

You might’ve also heard this diet called “The Egg and Green Tea Diet.” They’re basically the same thing.

I started this diet because I wanted to lose a solid 10 pounds before my 20-year high school reunion. I know, I know. Pretty cliché. Still, I get a lump in my throat every time I thought about walking into that shindig while trying desperately to suck in my gut and pull down my Spanx.

I’d just like to look hot for the thing, ok!?

Anyway. I digress.

The point is, the reunion was coming up in a month — A MONTH!

I needed something that would work fast, and I turned to my son’s favorite food: Eggs.

Eggs

So, this is my review of The Egg and Green Tea Diet, also known as The Egg Diet or the 2 Boiled Eggs and Green Tea Diet. It’s just my experience with this eating plan — no endorsements or advertisements. I did the diet for three days, and now I’m writing down my experience for anyone else who may have heard about this diet and was interested in trying it.

Here we go!

What Is The Egg and Green Tea Diet?

So, there are actually a lot of variations to the Egg Diet. In some variations, you eat eggs only. Like, I’m serious … you only eat eggs.

In another variation, you have eggs for just one of your meals, and you eat only three meals a day — no snacks, no desserts, no drinks.

In the variation that I tried, you can (mostly) only have four foods:

  • Eggs
  • Green tea
  • Oats
  • Apples

I did this diet for three days (The 3 Days Egg and Green Tea Diet), so I basically ate a bunch of different combinations of these four foods in order to lose weight.

What are other people saying about it?

First off, some of the people who have done this diet in the past said it averages to about 900 calories eaten per day. I think I probably ate more like 1300 calories a day. But that’s just a guess. And it’s still well below what I normally eat.

Most people who tried the diet were enthusiastic. They said they definitely got sick of eating these four foods after a few days. Some people did it for 10 days (which I can’t even imagine). But they did lose weight that way.

Other people really hated it. I read quite a number of reviews that basically ended in some variation of “I quit early.” Honestly, what other boiled egg apple and green tea diet results are you going to expect, though? Quitting early is common with any type of diet. So, it’s not necessarily a reflection of this diet specifically.

Are eggs good for you? What type of eggs should you eat?

Eggs are definitely good for you. I’ve read about their health benefits in multiple locations, from the Mayo Clinic website to the BBC. They don’t mention an egg and green tea diet for weight loss, specifically, but they do expound the benefits of eggs.

Basically, eggs contain a ton of protein, and they are high in a lot of nutrients like:

  • Selenium
  • Phosphorus
  • Vitamin A
  • Vitamin B2
  • Vitamin B5
  • Vitamin B12
  • Folate

Eggs are also low in calories. One egg contains about 78 calories only. And it will fill you up for a long time.

What are the benefits of green tea?

Green tea is what they call a superfood. It’s one of those foods that has so many wonderful health benefits, you’d be crazy not to drink it. I know this now, but before this diet with eggs and green tea, I never drank tea of any kind.

Now, I like green tea, and I do feel like it makes me feel more energized. So, I’ll be drinking it a little bit more. Specifically, green tea is supposed to:

  • Support brain health
  • Make your skin look younger
  • Reduce inflammation in the body
  • Improve heart health
  • Balance blood sugar (good for diabetics)
  • Prevent diabetes
  • Provide much-needed antioxidants for the body
  • Increase bone density
  • Help you live longer overall (Note: They drink a ton of green tea in Japan, and Japanese people notoriously live longer than most other people in the world!)

The Egg and Green Tea Diet Plan: What You Need to Know

Ok, so remember how I said I only ate four foods. Well, yeah, that’s not exactly true.

There are two lists of foods that you have to know about to do the 2 boiled eggs and green tea diet: the compliant list and the non-compliant list. The compliant list includes foods you can eat. The non-compliant list includes foods you can’t eat.

Also, it’s not an exact science. As I said, there are a lot of different variations of this diet. So, I just chose one that worked for me. Here are the lists that I used:

Compliant Foods

  • Eggs
  • Green tea
  • Apples
  • Oats
  • Olive oil
  • Coffee and half and half creamer
  • Water and other zero-calorie beverages
  • Non-starchy vegetables (bell peppers, broccoli, celery, etc.)

Noncompliant Foods

  • Sugar
  • Fried foods
  • Refined carbs (pasta, bread, etc.)
  • Alcohol
  • Juice and soda
  • Any beverages that have calories

Basically, you just eat from the compliant list of foods, and you have three meals a day.

You don’t eat snacks. You don’t eat dessert and you don’t drink alcohol. I limited my coffee to 2 cups a day (with just a tablespoon of half-and-half creamer in each). No sweets. No fried foods. You get the idea.

I did this for three days. I’ve outlined notes that I took from each day below. I wrote my notes at the end of each day, after dinner.

My Experience Over 3 Days

Day 1

Day 1 went by pretty fast. I started off the morning with a cup of coffee with a tablespoon of half-and-half while I read the newspaper. I also had a cup of green tea. For breakfast, I had an omelet with just some green and red bell pepper and three scrambled eggs. I topped it off with half of an apple.

You can’t have snacks, so I had to wait until noon for lunch. At lunch, I had 1 cup of oatmeal (made with water) and a soft boiled egg — pretty good!

By dinner, I was really hungry. I had another cup of coffee with cream and decided to make oatmeal again. I made oatmeal and sliced an apple on top. Then I had two scrambled eggs with some spinach.

Day 2

This morning, I woke up pretty hungry, so I had breakfast right away along with my green tea and coffee. I decided to try a spinach omelet today, and I added some asparagus spears.

Today, I started to get a stomach ache near lunch, and eggs sounded absolutely terrible, so I just had an apple, cut up and softened with cinnamon in the microwave. I had some green tea too, and that seemed to calm my stomach. Not sure if cinnamon is okay, but I figured it couldn’t hurt.

For dinner, I was feeling a bit better and decided to go back to having some eggs.

My eggs were eaten poached, so no oil. I also had another two apples and some leftover oatmeal cold. I never had my second cup of coffee.

Day 3

Today was my last day, and it was also the hardest. I woke up never wanting to have another egg in my life, so I decided to simply fry some non-starchy vegetables that were on the “okay” list. These included asparagus spears, spinach, broccoli, bell peppers, and onions. I fried them in olive oil and added some spices and salt. After a few bites, I realized it was terrible alone and added a scrambled egg. I also had coffee.

At lunch, I had a warm cup of green tea and heated up some oatmeal and an apple.

For dinner on my last night, I had an omelet with leftover vegetables from breakfast and three eggs. I topped it off with applesauce that I made on the stove with cinnamon. I also had a cup of green tea right before bed.

Noteworthy Points About the Egg and Green Tea Diet

Rolled Oats

Here are some of the most important things I noticed about being on this diet:

  • Eggs are great at making you feel full. Whenever I ate an egg dish, I usually wasn’t even hungry a few hours later, like I usually am.
  • You can make eggs a lot of different ways! I’m used to only having eggs hard-boiled, scrambled, or over-easy. But during this diet, I tried some new egg recipes, like a few different types of omelets, poached eggs, and soft-boiled eggs.
  • Green tea has amazing health benefits. The more I researched green tea, the more I realized I need to make it a permanent part of my diet.

Egg and Green Tea Diet Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Helped me lose 5 lbs. in 3 days
  • Didn’t taste all that bad (I like eggs, green tea, apples, and oats, though)
  • Still allowed for at least a little bit of coffee (I can’t go without it!)
  • Overall healthy
  • Allowed me to detox from sugar for 3 days

Cons

  • Got sick of it real quick (unsustainable)
  • Couldn’t drink alcohol on it (I like to have a glass of red wine with dinner)
  • Gave me mild indigestion

Difference Between This Diet and a Standard Diet

It should go without saying that the biggest difference between the Egg and Green Tea Diet and other diets is that you can’t eat as many foods on this diet. For all intents and purposes, let’s say that a “standard diet” is one where you can basically eat anything you want, but you count your calories.

Most people try to eat around 1200 calories a day if they’re doing a calorie restrictive standard diet. Of course, this is going to vary depending on how much exercise you do, how tall you are, your age, etc.

So, on a simple calorie-restrictive diet, you can eat whatever you want. If you want to have five candy bars at 250 calories each for all your meals in one day, you can do that. If you want to eat two pounds of carrots and two pounds of celery all in one day, you can do that. You simply count your calories.

Because you can basically eat whatever you want on a standard diet, which makes The Egg and Green Tea Diet much more restrictive. In other words, it’s going to be hard to go out to eat, to go to a friend’s house for dinner, or to grab a snack on the road if you’re doing The Egg Diet. You basically have to be at home all the time and cook your own meals.

Another big difference is that The Egg Diet can cause some, ahem, digestive issues. My son, bless his little heart, can have some bad gas. And I think it’s honestly because he eats so many eggs. Eggs tend to be linked to issues like constipation, gas, and even some nausea. Apparently, it’s because eggs are high in protein and don’t have a lot of fiber.

I didn’t experience this, per se (just a mild tummy ache). But I think that’s because I only did this diet for three days.

Who The Egg and Green Tea Diet Is For

I’ll talk more about this later, but basically, I think The Egg Diet is for people who want to kickstart their weight loss. It’s not a long-term diet. You can’t do it for very long without either going crazy or perhaps having some serious digestive or other health issues. It’s not going to make you sick or anything. But long story short, it’s just not sustainable.

On the other hand, if you’re looking to drop 3 to 5 pounds in 3 to 5 days, this could be a good diet for you. It basically helps you lose those first pounds of water weight really quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions about The Egg and Green Tea Diet? So did I!

Save your time, and learn from my research 🙂

Q: How long are you supposed to do this diet?

A: There our different variations. You can do the diet for three days (like I did). Or, you can do the diet for one week, two weeks, or even a month. I would advise sticking to a short period of time — not more than a week. If you want to have an egg-based diet and do it for longer than a week, I would just incorporate more “compliant foods” like fruits and other vegetables.

Q: Can I have coffee?

A: Well, yes and no. Some people don’t have coffee, but I chose to. I simply can’t wake up in the morning without at least one cup of coffee.

I allowed myself 2 regular sized mugs of coffee every day. In each one, I allowed myself to have 1 tablespoon of half-and-half creamer also.

Q: How do I cook the eggs if I can only have four foods?

A: I wondered this too! When I thought that you could only have four foods for real at first, I was like, “okay so do all the eggs have to be poached then?”

As I said before, that was before I decided to go with compliant and non-compliant food lists. I found a variation of The Egg Diet that allowed olive oil. That way, I was made able to make all sorts of egg dishes (scrambled eggs, over-easy eggs, omelets, etc.) instead of just having poached eggs.

Q: Is The Egg Diet a “fad diet”?

A: Well, yeah. But that didn’t stop me from trying it! I’ve tried a lot of different fad diets, including The Grapefruit Diet, The M Plan (M for mushroom), juice cleanses, and even The Cabbage Soup Diet. U usually look at these fad diets as kick-starters to lose more weight, and it’s been helpful for me in the past.

In high school, I lost 15 lbs. after doing a juice cleanse for five days and then continuing on with a calorie restricted diet. And later in college, me and my roommate did The Cabbage Soup Diet. We didn’t last long on that diet (I think we made it about three or four days). But again, it helped both of us lose a few pounds right off the bat, and we were able to continue losing weight with a more sustainable diet afterward.

My Opinion – Does It Really Work For WeightLoss?

So, my opinion is sort of mixed.

On one hand, the diet definitely works. I lost 5 pounds in 3 days. That’s … amazing. That’s already half of what I wanted to lose.

But … and here’s the problem: I know that’s only water weight.

Do I feel lighter? Sure. Do my jeans fit a little better? Yeah okay. But am I actually lighter? I don’t really think so.

I think, in the end, I recommend The Egg and Green Tea Diet as a kick-starter. By that, I mean you can get off to a great start on your weight loss journey by doing this diet. But you should switch over to a more holistic alternative pretty fast.

Personally, I want something that’s more sustainable because I know I couldn’t do this diet for more than three days.

I looked around at some other alternatives to hopefully find a transition.

There’s Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, the Keto Diet, and then this one I found called Metabolic Cooking. That’s the one I’ll be doing now as it’s more science-based, and as someone who likes THE FACTS, that resonates with me. (Also, okay you got me — the 50% discount I found resonated with me too!).
